Flowers will always be one of the most favored gift items on special occasions especially on Valentine’s Day. They tickle one’s sense of sight, smell and touch with their delicate beauty and adorable scent. The thrill of sending and receiving a bouquet of flowers stays on as romantic relationships start and blossom.
There could be a number of reasons for a man to offer a flower to a woman (or vice versa). It could mean “Sorry”, “Thank you”, “I love you” and a thousand more words. However, experience proves that most men are not really familiar with the names of flowers and clueless on which ones to pick for their beloved. To serve as guide for flower greenhorns - both men and women - Dra. Veronica “Nikki” Chatto of King Louis Flowers and Plants, Inc. shares some tips on knowing what flowers to choose for this season of hearts.
Roses are as equally charming as other floral species but they continue to dominate the market because of their extraordinary popularity. It’s time to give each kind of flower a fair chance. Nikki recommends:
Potted tulips with three lovely sprouts available for only P350, which are much cheaper compared to a loose dozen of roses, local (P500) and imported (P1,200).
Carnations of all colors from red, pink, peach, yellow, white to two-toned
Pre-arranged mixed bouquets of roses, carnations, tulips, liliums, gerberas or other variations available for only P600. Additional fee will be charged for customization.
Nikki relates that in her experience of delivering bouquets, the women have always been glad and satisfied - even if the flowers they received were not roses. Then again, as much as women would want to keep the flowers for sentimental purpose, they simply have to accept that flowers no matter how expensive will wilt in time. But don’t worry! Nikki, from her annual seminars and conferences on flower business, learned how to be a flower doctor and she is very willing to make you one.
Make fresh flowers last longer by following these steps:
After untangling the flowers from the bouquet, use a sharp-edged knife to cut their ends diagonally. (It has to be cut diagonally so that the air will not be trapped inside the stem, bubbles will not be formed and that the water can go up freely to the flower.)
Soak the flowers in a pot of warm water with a little sugar. (1 liter: ½ tsp. of sugar) Sugar is known for its property to enhance flowers.
Place the pot of flowers in a nice environment with a temperature that is not too warm nor too cool. Air-conditioned room is okay.
When the flowers started to wilt, hang them upside down in a humid place and let them dry or have them framed through flower preservation experts such as Timeless Memories.
