 Celebrate womanhood this March! This is the perfect time to thank and praise every woman in your life—mother, sister, grandmother, nanny and yourself if you are a woman, too!
As much as we’d like to party this special event away, we can’t help but look back a little to history and notice that gender equality is still an on-going issue to some parts of the world. General Assembly Binding Women for Reform, Integrity, Equality, Leadership and Action (GABRIELA), as part of the Women’s Month celebration, presented information about violence against women to the public.
Meanwhile, women lawmakers offer medical missions for the whole month of March, which involve cancer awareness campaign and free breast examination, free bone screening, feeding program, free ear piercing for girls and reading glasses.
And since the theme for this year is “Kababaihan: Nagtataguyod ng Kakayanan at Kabuhayan tungo sa Kaunlaran”, the month’s activities include livelihood training programs such as jewelry-making. This highlights “the critical role of women in nation-building and poverty reduction”. Cynthia Villar, president of women lawmakers, says in an article published at the The Philippine Star dated March 5, 2009. “We have included livelihood training in our activities to promote women’s economic empowerment and rights through entrepreneurship.”
