The Phat, Fat Dog
Trendy clothes and Accessories for your Dog Friends

By Romina Tobias

The tides of couture are shifting and claws are clapping as glamorized pooches can now strut the streets with their new showstopping gear.

The dog-loving team behind these successfully made-over canines is under the name, The Fat Dog –a specialty boutique for fabulous dog clothes and accessories.

The Fat Dog was put up in the summer of 2003 by the Pena Family. Niki Pena shares, “The company was named The Fat Dog after our Labrador, Denver.  He inspired the business as we found it quite difficult to find collars that were sturdy and durable yet comfortable and trendy as well.  Back then, nice collars were not yet available in the local market and dog clothes were almost unheard of.  We knew that many other pet owners shared our sentiments, so we decided to make the exact collars that we wanted and needed.  Also, Denver used to wear my old shirts whenever he was let inside the house or the car to keep him from shedding all over the upholstery. These of course were not very comfortable as they were too tight or too loose at all the wrong places.” So what began with just a selection of customized collars and leashes, eventually evolved into a whole line of dog clothes. And being hailed as the company’s CEO, Denver gets to inspire his team to create designs that won’t just fit him but will suit other pups and pooches perfectly.

Niki is the creative talent behind Fat Dog’s designs.” I do the designs for our products, create the samples then outsource to sewers who produce limited quantities so that we can have more variety.  Whatever is new always becomes the best seller as we do love coming out with unusual accessories like backpacks and neck puffs,” she asserts.

The Fat Dog offers a wide range of styles to suit any canine size and personality –she can go girly and flirtatious with Fat Dog’s sophisticated glam wear. Or if your pup wants to spend the day outdoors, dress him in comfortable and fun-colored play shirts. Heading to the mall? Let them dress down with the Casual Chic line.

For the summer months, The Fat Dog plans to come out with bright collars and leashes perfect for outings. “Clothes will take a backseat to neckpieces this season since they’re so hot!” Niki excitingly shares.

Also available are scrapbook kits for your pets, fashionable bags, fur stickers and holders, vests, cute and luxurious bath essentials, travel bowls, beds, and mats! Who says your dogs can’t live in style?

The Fat Dog products are available at all True Value Hardware branches and in their showroom. A Vet's Sale will run until April 13 at their showroom located at T6 Cartagena Villas, Cartagena St. BF Garden Homes Rio, Las Piñas.  They’ll be offering 40% discount to all wholesalers with a minimum purchase of 5,000.00.
