Fast, High-tech Learning at MITC

By Romina Tobias

Knowledge in technology has a short shelf life. Even before mastery is achieved, technology gets an upgrade.  It happens at such an incredible pace.    Information technology is at the core of the so-called knowledge economy.  People wanting to stay relevant to the needs of the booming IT sector need to be at the forefront of changes and developments.  One cannot afford to be left behind.

The Mapua Information Technology Center (MITC), a subsidiary of the Mapua Institute of Technology, is committed to advancing IT education in the country.

MITC’s Technology Oriented Programs (TOP) provides a definitive environment for cutting edge IT education.  Ricky Corpuz, Head of TOP says, “TOP was put up in 2001 to serve the growing need for Information Technology training for professionals and career shifters. TOP specializes in customized programs for companies.  These programs are developed and delivered by IT professionals who are abreast with current trends and developments in the IT industry. TOP also offers complementary programs to develop well-rounded IT professionals. These programs include project management, workplace communication, technical writing, and customer service to name just a few of our offerings that are in demand.”

Students and professionals who wish to take certification examinations to further their business competencies could really benefit from TOP’s short courses –Individuals who want to refresh and sharpen their IT knowledge, busy executives who need to respond to industry changes, and corporate personnel who recognize the need to maintain a competitive advantage in technology are the best candidates for TOP courses. Mr. Corpuz adds, “For non-IT professionals, taking our short courses is the fastest way to enter the IT field. Our boot camp programs fast track the acquisition of knowledge and skills  in such programs as Java, .NET, Oracle, Web development, CISCO, LINUX, and Non-IT programs such as Accounting, Management, Sales, and other business-related courses.”

MITC also puts a heavy premium on giving the workforce a solid English foundation for optimum productivity. To this end, MITC established the English Language Center (ELC) in 2005.

The ELC uses a customized assessment tool (Mapúa English Language Test or MELT) developed by foreign experts to test the levels of English skills with workplace language communication requirements clearly in mind. The results of the assessment serve as a strong basis for mapping out a training plan for the client.  Among the programs offered by the ELC are: English for the Workplace (Speaking and Writing) Technical Writing, Business Writing, and Intensive Grammar Review.

TOP also designs the curriculum for companies who have specific requirements for highly specialized courses.
