The best thing about comics is that it allows its readers to travel through thrilling four-colour worlds filled with a variety of denizens who are good, bad or in-between. It is exhilarating to fly to different planets with Darna, tussle with the various leather-faced goons or diabolical supervillains, and save the day just by turning the pages of a comic book.
In fact, though most comics consist of paneled images, one might be surprised how the four sides of a comic panel can hold so many rich universes and how far from reality these comics can take readers.
True to point, this year's Komikon at the UP Bahay ng Alumni was a veritable travel agency to the fantastic, the funny, and the exciting.
But among the many komikeros there hoping to take readers to faraway lands, one studio, Infernokrusher Factory offered the promise of whisking away its readers further away to even wilder and more mind-blowing realms.
Helmed by Funny Komiks veterans Michael Kanoy and Dennis Labaco, InfernoKrusher Factory is, as the name dictates, a proponent of the InfernoKrusher sub-genre of Weird Fiction. Like its namesake genre, the studio aims to violate established fiction-writing norms by creating utterly explosive and disturbing storylines for mature readers. They even describe their work as “building their own dungeon and filling it with nightmares and having fun at the expense of any rules, authorities and even gods.”
For instance, it's possible to kill off the lead characters midway. It may sound difficult to do so while keeping the story engaging but Mike Kanoy says that's where the trick lies and it seems like they're ready to rise to that challenge with their komiks magazine preview featuring two stories, Arkhell and Gunstar Kommand.
Arkhell is “a gothic fantasy set in an alternate reality where the Iglesia is a corrupt tyrannical ruling octopus empire. The lead is a cursed angel struggling to leave this oppressive land". It is written by Mike and illustrated by Dennis. The dark and menacing narration and art make this ideal for readers with a penchant for tales with mystery and deceit.
On the other hand, Mike's Gunstar Kommand uses his "coloring book manga" style to take his readers to a rip-roarin' world of “freelance mercenaries in a frontier mining planet trying to establish a new home in the midst of strange environs and wanton hostiles”. Filled with swearing cowboys, humanoid spiders and a lot of gun-slinging, it is perfect for comic fans who want to experience excitement and see some aliens.

InfernoKrusher Factory and its skippers, Dennis Labaco and Mike Kanoy want to take readers to the uncharted territories of comic fiction with their heady and gripping stories and artwork. So expect more komiks you'll want to read under your covers with your flashlight from these dudes soon.
