On July 6, 1994, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas granted EastWest Bank authority to operate as a commercial bank - the first commercial banking license issued by the central bank in over 20 years. Things were not as rosy for the banking industry then.
As it became more liberalized, the Philippine banking industry saw the emergence of more banking institutions and the introduction of various products and services that went beyond the traditional concepts of saving and credit.
Philippine banking has never been more alive than it is today.
Backed up by a formidable real-state industry stalwart, the Filinvest Group of Companies, EastWest Bank formally opened its doors to the public along Sen. Gil Puyat Ave., Makati City on August 1, 1994.
A forward-looking culture has enabled EastWest Bank to pioneer innovations in banking particularly in its online banking facilities. Five years into its operations, EastWest Bank has embarked on a full computerization program that has made possible a more efficient delivery system of bank products and services through its growing nationwide network of branches.
In 2004, the bank received the prestigious Best Website Award in the Banking and Finance category of the 7th Philippine Web Awards, the most coveted award in the field of Web design. The Bank's Website has been commended for its timely updates, informative, well-written and useful content and its masterful blending of visual elements vis-a-vis an easy navigation of the site.
The Bank scored a first in online banking recently when it introduced the Check Imaging Facility, which enables accountholders to view online the checks they issued a week after they clear. This facility eliminates tedious physical storage and monitoring of checks. Transfer of funds, monitoring of statements and payment of bills are made more convenient with the Net Access. The Bank also has the distinction of being the first to give housing loan applicants indicative approval of their applications via its Internet loan application process.
To make possible the efficient delivery of products and services, the Bank has been aggressively recruiting the best talents in the banking industry. By year-end 2007, EastWest Bank had welcomed more than 400 new employees, bringing its total manpower to close to 1,400. The year also closed with 77 branches: 50 in Metro Manila and 27 in key provincial areas. More branches are set to be opened this year to bring the Bank's products and services closer to the community.
All these steps are directed towards the attainment of EastWest Bank's vision of providing world-class banking anchored on service excellence.
In line with this new vision, a new corporate slogan was unveiled at the beginning of 2008: A PASSION FOR SERVICE. Simpler. Faster. Better. This new slogan embodies the new direction of the Bank - simpler procedures and faster transactions that will ultimately result in better banking.
As EastWest Bank prepares to turn 14, more innovations and expansion programs are set to happen. It will continue to focus on its customers and differentiate itself through service. With its renewed vision and programs geared towards the attainment of such, EastWest Bank is better positioned to come up with service offerings that will provide superior service and utmost convenience to its valued customers.
